What does Power-to-Heat mean?
Power-to-Heat refers to the direct conversion of surplus PV electricity into heat – typically for domestic hot water production. Instead of feeding surplus solar power into the grid for a few cents, it is used for 100% self-consumption via an electric heating element in the buffer tank. This is one of the most economical methods to increase PV self-consumption.
AC ELWA 2 – the core component
The AC ELWA 2 is a steplessly controllable 3.5 kW heating element with a standard G-1½" thread, enabling linear PV surplus utilization. Via a smart meter, grid feed-in is regulated to zero in a matter of seconds. Connection via Ethernet (Modbus TCP), RS485 (Modbus RTU), PWM or isolated switching output. A second external 3 kW heating element can also be controlled.

Cost-effectiveness
With a 5 kWp PV system and a 300-liter buffer tank: typical annual coverage of 60–80% of hot water demand. Savings of approx. €250–400 per year compared to grid consumption at 25 ct/kWh. Very economical even for small systems (2–5 kWp), as it is steplessly adjustable from the watt range.
What is Power-to-Heat?
The direct conversion of surplus PV electricity into heat via an electric heating element. Instead of low feed-in tariffs, your own electricity is used for hot water preparation.
Is the ELWA 2 worthwhile for a small PV system?
Yes. Since the heating element regulates steplessly from the watt range, every tiny surplus is utilized – it is profitable even for 2–5 kWp systems.
Do I need an extra storage tank?
No, the ELWA 2 is screwed into an existing hot water or buffer tank with a G 1½" standard sleeve. Immersion depth approx. 360 mm.
