How does the AC ELWA 2 work?
The AC ELWA 2 measures the current flow at the house connection via a Smart Meter. As soon as the PV system produces more electricity than the household currently consumes, the device continuously regulates the built-in 3.5 kW heating element so that grid feed-in is kept exactly at zero. The surplus PV electricity is thus directly converted into hot water – more economically than any grid feed-in at cent tariffs.
Which inverters is the ELWA 2 compatible with?
With practically all inverters and smart meters available on the market. The connection is made either directly via Modbus TCP (Ethernet), Modbus RTU (RS485) or via the standalone Smart Meter "Power Meter" from my-PV. Specific compatibility lists and connection examples can be found in the official manual.
How much hot water does a typical household cover with it?
With a 5 kWp PV system and a 300-liter storage tank, the ELWA 2 typically covers 60 – 80 % of the annual hot water demand in Austria with solar energy. In summer practically 100 %, in winter supportive. With electricity prices of 25 cents/kWh, annual savings of approx. 250 – 400 euros can be achieved compared to grid purchase.
Is the ELWA 2 also worthwhile for small PV systems?
Yes, especially for smaller systems (2 – 5 kWp), the economic efficiency is particularly high. Since the ELWA 2 regulates continuously from the watt range, every smallest surplus is utilized – even in cloudy weather or weak winter sun.
Do I need an additional storage tank or can I use an existing one?
The ELWA 2 is screwed into an existing hot water or buffer storage tank – standard G 1½" sleeve. No new storage tank is necessary, provided a free sleeve is available (often there is a dedicated spot for it). Immersion depth approx. 360 mm.
