Frequently Asked Questions about the AIKO Neostar 3P+54 Bifacial 485 Wp
What is ABC cell technology and what makes it special?
ABC stands for "All Back Contact" – all electrical contacts are on the rear side of the solar cell. Advantages: no visible busbars on the front, resulting in more active cell area, higher efficiency (24.3%), and a uniformly black appearance. ABC cells are the most advanced cell technology on the market – even more efficient than TOPCon and HJT. AIKO is the global pioneer of this technology for mass-produced modules.
What does bifacial mean and how much additional yield does it provide?
Bifacial means: the module generates electricity on both the front AND the back. With bright surfaces like snow, white gravel, or concrete, 15–25% additional annual yield is realistic. With dark asphalt or grass, it's only 5–10%. Particularly effective for elevated installations, carports, flat roof systems, and agri-PV.
How much electricity does the AIKO Neostar 485 Wp generate per year?
In Austria, a 485 Wp module generates between 480 and 560 kWh per year (front side only), depending on location and orientation. With bifacial elevation and a bright surface, an additional 50–135 kWh can be gained. Thanks to ABC technology and a very low temperature coefficient, the module delivers more yield even in summer and in partial shading than comparable TOPCon modules. At an electricity price of 25 cents/kWh, this corresponds to a saving of 120 to 175 Euros per module per year.
Why is AIKO better in partial shading?
Three reasons: Firstly, the ABC cell architecture conducts electricity with significantly less loss even in partial shading than classic front-contact cells. Secondly, the cell temperature in the shaded area remains cooler – this protects against hotspots and extends lifespan. Thirdly, the cells react more uniformly to changing light conditions. In practice, this means 5–15% more yield for systems with shading from trees, chimneys, or neighboring buildings.
What is the difference between glass-glass and glass-foil?
Glass-glass modules like the AIKO Neostar have tempered glass on both the front AND back (2.0 mm each – significantly more than the market standard of 1.6 mm). Advantages: exceptionally resistant to moisture, UV, microcracks, and mechanical stress, longer lifespan, lower degradation, and better fire protection properties. Ideal for long-term installations over 30+ years.
Is the module suitable for snowy regions in Austria?
Yes, with a snow load of 5400 Pa (equivalent to approx. 550 kg/m²) and a wind load of 2400 Pa, the module is ideally suited for alpine locations. Especially important: It is officially hail-tested with a grain diameter of 35 mm and an impact velocity of 23 m/s – a decisive safety advantage given the increasingly severe hail events in Austria. Operating temperature of −40 to +70 °C covers all climatic conditions. In winter, the bifacial rear side also benefits from snow reflection.
Which inverters are compatible with the AIKO Neostar 485 Wp?
The module is compatible with all common inverters. Equipped with MC4-EVO2A connectors. The 1500 V DC system voltage and moderate short-circuit current of 14.84 A allow flexible string configurations for residential and commercial use. Suitable hybrid and string inverters are available from SOLARVIC.
Is the module compatible with power optimizers or rapid shutdown?
Yes. Equipped with MC4-EVO2A connectors and compatible with common power optimizers. This allows for shading-tolerant systems and rapid shutdown solutions compliant with fire safety regulations to be implemented without problems. Three bypass diodes in the IP68 junction box additionally minimize hotspot losses – but ABC technology itself already makes the module more shading-tolerant than others.
How many modules do I need for my house?
An average Austrian household consumes 4,500 to 5,500 kWh of electricity per year. With the AIKO Neostar 485 Wp, you will need between 9 and 13 modules for a typical residential system with 4.4 to 6.3 kWp, depending on the location and roof orientation. SOLARVIC will be happy to advise you on the individual sizing of your photovoltaic system.
Which mounting system is suitable for the AIKO 485 Wp?
The module with dimensions 1762 × 1134 × 30 mm and 24.2 kg is compatible with all common mounting systems. Suitable mounting systems for pitched and flat roofs are available from SOLARVIC. Please note the slightly higher weight of the double-glass module (24.2 kg) when designing the substructure. For maximum bifacial additional yield, elevated installations with at least 80 cm distance to the bright surface are recommended.
What does Bloomberg Tier 1 mean and why is it important?
Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) ranks module manufacturers in Tiers based on creditworthiness, size, and availability of bankability. Tier 1 modules are considered bankable – this is important for insurance, bank financing, and warranty claims over 25–30 years. AIKO is Tier 1 certified. Additionally, the warranty can optionally be reinsured by Munich RE – one of the world's largest reinsurers. This ensures that warranty claims remain valuable even after 30 years.
